Puppies And Adult Dogs

How Much to Feed a Dog (Commercial and Homemade Foods)

The first ingredient in your dog's food should be a specified meat. Not a meat by-product, but the real thing. Puppies and adult dogs were not meant to eat corn and wheat. If the first ingredient in your dog food is a corn, wheat, meat by-product, bone meal or anything but a real specified type of meat, steer clear. By-products are the leftovers, such as the eyes, hooves, skin, feathers and feet, that are not good for human consumption Beware of ingredients that do not list exactly what it is, such as words like "animal" and "meat" as opposed to "chicken,""beef,""duck," etc. See Rendered Products in Dog Food.

The first ingredient on the label should represent what the dog food is most made out of, but beware, as this is not always the case…

Using chicken as an example, when a dog food lists a meat in the ingredients such as "chicken" it is going by the weight in the meats raw state, before it was cooked.

Chicken in its raw state weighs about 80% more than it does once it is cooked and processed into a dry pellet. Once it is processed you are left with only 20% of the actual meat.

The word "meal" in an ingredient is something that was weighed after the water was taken out. For example "chicken meal" is chicken which is weighed after it has been cooked and the water has already been taken out, giving you more meat and protein per weight volume.

Frequently Asked Questions

Variety is best! Most common are boneless, chopped chicken or turkey breast or thighs ground beef or ground chicken/turkey or chunks of stew beef.

You should also try to include bison, venison, lamb, rabbit, and/or duck, from time to time. You can often get these at farmer's markets.

Yes, although most supermarket meat comes from livestock that were raised inhumanely and fed crappy processed corn-based diets, instead of being allowed to free-feed on natural grass. That can affect the quality of the meat.

So if you can find it and afford it, I highly recommend "organic" meat from local, free-range, grass-fed livestock. This is even more important if you're going to feed it raw.

I prefer lean for most dogs. It's easier to keep a meal's overall fat content down if you don't feed fattier cuts of meat.

Yes, although I don't recommend too much fish, because so many species contain toxins such as mercury. We've polluted our oceans, sad to say. The lowest-mercury fish seems to be Wild Alaskan Salmon.

But feeding fish once a week is great. I prefer to cook fish, as cooking kills a particular type of worm in fish that could make a dog sick.

But dogs need the rich nutrients in organ meat. In fact, organ meat is so rich that dogs should only eat a little bit at a time, else they might get diarrhea.

How Much Kibble To Feed A Puppy

To determine how much kibble to feed your puppy determine their estimated adult weight refer to our chart below to find their daily caloric needs, and then look up the "calories per serving" on the nutrition facts label on your kibble. You should be set.

But then again, what exactly is kibble?

The truth is, not everyone knows how their pet's food is made, especially when it comes to kibble. To produce kibble, a mixture of carbs, plant or animal protein, and fats of various quality are mixed into a paste. An extrusion process forces these ingredients together and processes them into nuggets to create the shape that we associate with kibble. After these nuggets are made, animal fat is typically sprayed on the kibble to increase palatability.

Not pretty. And all that varies brand to brand, so you almost never know the true quality inside. Herere some of the more common fillers youll find listed on the kibble bag, and what they actually mean.

How Much Homemade Food Does Your Dog Need Per Day

If your dog is a PUPPY ,

If your dog is an ADULT , he should eat 2-3% of his body weight each day.

More sedentary adult dogs can be fed the lesser percentage, while very active adults can be fed the higher.

The average adult dog usually does best in the middle of the range, about 2.5% of their body weight per day.

Dog's weight

1.5 to 2 lbs daily divide into two meals
100 lb dog 2 to 3 lb daily divide into two meals

If your dog is between weights, get out your calculator! Multiply his weight by 2% and also by 3%. That will be his range, and again, most dogs do best in the middle.

  • For very small breeds , I usually feed the high end of the range . Toy breeds have a faster metabolism that burns through food more quickly.
  • For very large breeds , I usually feed the low end of the range, as their metabolism is slower.

Adult dogs should eat two meals a day, so you need to divide the total amount of food into two smaller meals, as shown on the chart. Dogs who eat only once a day experience an empty stomach and may even spit up white froth or bile. Think of how our own stomachs growl and how we feel irritable when we've gone many hours without eating.

How Much Raw Food To Feed A Cat

Feed approximately 2-3% of your cat's weight daily, and split this between two meals. A 10 lb. cat would receive 1.5 to 2.5 ounces per meal. Again, this will depend on the individual cat's activity level and metabolism. To calculate the appropriate amount of food to feed your cat, take your cat's weight in pounds and multiply by:

  • .02
  • .025
  • .03

Then, take the total and multiply by 16 to get the correct number of ounces to feed each day. Be sure to split the number in half if you are feeding twice a day.

Many cat parents prefer small patties or medallions when feeding their cats.

One rule of thumb is to feed 2-4% of the pets body weight. Smaller dogs will require a higher percentage of their body weight, while larger dogs will require a smaller percentage of their body weight. The daily portion should be split between morning and night.

  • a 10 lb. dog will eat about 2 to 2-1/2 lbs. per week or about 10 lbs per month
  • a 25 lb. dog will eat about 5 lbs per week or about 20 lbs per month
  • a 50 lb. dog will eat about 8 lbs per week or about 32 lbs per month
  • a 75 lb. dog will eat about 10-1/2 lbs per week or about 42 lbs per month

Remember that these are guidelines and that food needs vary. Observe your pet closely and increase or reduce food quantity as needed for proper weight. Always consult your integrative veterinarian, especially for puppies and pregnant or nursing dogs.

When Should I Feed My Dog

Now that you know youll want to feed your dog twice a day , you have to decide when to feed your dog.

Generally, youll want to feed her once in the morning and again in the evening . Ideally, your dogs dinner should occur about 8 to 12 hours after breakfast.

In other words, if you feed your dog breakfast at 7:00 AM, youll want dinner to be sometime between 3:00 and 7:00 PM.

Aside from this, there are no hard-and-fast rules about meal times, except that youll want mealtimes to remain consistent.

This will not only help prevent your dog from becoming ravenous between meals and give her body an appropriate amount of time to digest her previous meal, but it will also help establish a regular routine something dogs crave.

In practice, it is often helpful to consider your own schedule when establishing regular feeding times. If, for example, you leave for work each day around 8:00 AM, you may want to make 7:30 your pups normal breakfast time. And because you get home from work around 5:30, you may want to make dinner time around 6:00 each day.

Of course, not everyone has a consistent day-to-day schedule. Thats fine, but youll just have to figure out a way to feed your dog around the same time each day. An automatic feeder may be helpful if you come and go at odd hours. You may also want to set your phone to alert you at your pups breakfast and dinner time if you have trouble remembering.

Should I Feed My Dog Raw Meat

Over the last ten years a more natural raw diet of meat and bones has become increasingly popular. Some people now believe that raw meat is the best food for Labrador Retrievers and many other breeds of dog. This is despite some websites giving out dire warnings of the dangers of letting dogs consume bones.

I wrote a fairly in-depth article on why I switched to raw food for my dogs some years ago. You can read about that and discover much more about raw feeding in Raw Feeding: A Natural Diet For Dogs. And you can also find out a lot more about raw feeding in Tom Lonsdales excellent books on the subject*.

Unfortunately, raw feeding does seem to attract a few extremists. Plus, it can be tricky to find objective and unbiased discussions of the pros and cons of raw feeding on the internet.

Should You Feed Cows Milk To Your Lab

One common mistake made by new Labrador puppy owners is to feed their puppy on cows milk. Unfortunately cows milk is not well suited to puppies and may give your puppy diarrhoea. You can buy replacement dog milk but an eight week old puppy is actually weaned and doesnt need milk at all.

If you have inadvertently bought a puppy that is too young to leave its mother , phone your vet for advice on proper care and feeding. And take the pup for a check up without delay. Adult animals dont need milk. With adult Labradors, as with adult humans, many do enjoy drinking milk as a treat, and some tolerate it well.

Others however, will feel uncomfortable or nauseous after drinking milk, or even suffer from diarrhea. Only you will know how milk affects your dog. If in doubt, go without.
